2) OLD TRIVIAL SCHOOL/ OLD ADULT EDUCATION INSTITUTE
Lace-making as a hobby

Rauma Adult Education Institute has organised lace-making courses in the old trivial school for decades now. Even today courses are held every week. Each year lace-making courses attract some 300 students.

In the premises of the old Adult Education Institute an association of lace-makers was formed in 1948. Back then the association was called the Rauma Society of Amateur Lace Makers, today it is called the Lace Makers’ Association. Well known lace-makers have also celebrated their birthdays at the old Adult Education Institute.

A trivial school operated in the building in the 19th century.

Maija Salonen, one of the lace-making teachers of today, was born in the Kirsti house where lace has always been made. For instance, in the 1830s, the women of the owner family as well as the tenants were mentioned in the list of Rauma lace-makers. Also lace-making pillows and bobbins were made in the Kirsti house in the 20th century. Today, the Kirsti house is a museum.
