6) NAULAMÄKI
There were lace-makers in every house on Naulamäki

In addition to the Kiviniemi corner, Naulamäki was an area with lace-makers in every house. The Rauma seamen’s wives and children earned additional income by making lace even in the early decades of the 20th century.

In 1976 a lace-maker statue made by Räike was erected. Hjalmar Nortamo’s thought of lace-making is engraved in the foot of the statue: "To make a living out of it, many a sweaty moment has to be spent. Besides, it takes more than just any old fool to do it in the first place."

Sepplä, Isomalminkatu 4

In the small building of Sepplä there is just one tiny room. An old lace-maker lived as a tenant in it until the 1950s. The ladies of the town used to order lace for their linens from her, and thereby helped the old woman to make a living.

There were lace-makers elsewhere in the neighbourhood, too. Even in the early 20th century many children still had to make lace after school. Only when this chore was completed, they were allowed to go and play.
