The
building boom
Most of the buildings of Old Rauma received their current appearance
in the building boom of the 1890s. The final years of the great sailing
ship era was a time of great prosperity for Rauma. The wealth of the
local shipowners was reflected in a great bout of building.
Old buildings were renovated in Old Rauma
Several new public buildings were erected outside the old town, but
the townsmen were still unwilling to leave their former area of residence.
As the town was already densely built, new houses could not be built
without major town plan revisions. Therefore, the people of Old Rauma
had be content with repairing the old buildings. The buildings were
extended and lifted on higher foundations and the height of rooms
and attics was increased.
Neo-Renaissance style was in fashion
Many of the buildings of Old Rauma received a neo-Renaissance boarding
in the 1890s. The facades were divided into segments by horizontal
decorative profiles. The segments were boarded in different ways,
some horizontally, others vertically. More characteristic details
were the richly decorative boards around the windows.
