The gate of the Wähä-Wälkklä

A
gate is an important part of a house in Old Rauma
In Old Rauma the dwellings have been positioned alongside the streets
and the outbuildings at the other end of the courtyard. On the street
side the plot is bordered by the buildings as well as a tall gate,
which makes the closed yard a private area. At the back of the courtyard
there is a tall fence, a plank wall.
The gates built in the late 19th century and in the early 20th century
were designed to complement the style of the main building. The gates
were often decorative and wished the visitor welcome to the house.
There are still a few older gates left in Old Rauma. These are very
simple in style. There are also a few houses left with entrance to
the courtyard through the building. The gate is actually a room.
