Red
ochre paint
Traditional red ochre paint is suitable for new wooden surfaces as
well as for surfaces that have previously been painted with red ochre.
If the fading of the colour is no problem, one treatment with red
ochre paint is enough to last for 50 years.
Red ochre paint, however, cannot protect wood from the cracking caused
by the rays of the sun. Therefore, for thin tongued and grooved board
as well as for window casement frames more protective oil paint is
recommended.
You
can easily make red ochre paint yourself.
Linseed oil paint protects
Linseed oil paint is another traditional paint suitable for the external
walls of wooden buildings. The paint is a mixture of cooked linseed
oil (varnish) and a colour pigment. Oil paint prevents the weathering
effect of the sun and forms a breathing, beautifully aging coat over
the wooden surface.
As the traditional oil paint ages, it crumbles and becomes chalky.
Gradually the paint disappears from the surface like red ochre paint.
Before repainting the surface, the old oil paint is just brushed or
washed off and the crumbling paint is scraped off with a scraping
iron.
